The Decalogue, a series of ten one-hour dramas originally made for Polish
television before the collapse of Communism, is acclaimed by critics throughout
the world and included on the Vatican top film list.
Though each episode is inspired by one of the Ten Commandments, these are not simple morality tales. Disturbing scenes of disordered behavior, as well as moving glimpses of human goodness, force the viewer to ponder the many ways in which man both breaks and keeps the laws of God.
Each episode is self-contained: from Decalogue I (“I Am the Lord Thy God”), the touching and tragic story of a boy who starts asking his rationalist father and religious aunt the hard questions of life, to Decalogue X (“Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbor’s Goods”), a comic tale of estranged brothers who bond through a winding ordeal involving their father’s Priceless stamp collection.
The Decalogue is nothing less than a portrait of the human soul.
Not rated by the MPAA, the USCCB classification is A-III—adults. Not recommended for sensitive viewers or those under the age of 17. Content includes depictions of a murder and an execution, extramarital and nonmarital affairs and encounters (no explicit nudity), disordered attractions, and references to abortion.
